Numbers, numeracy, and graphs
40% of overall population in Canada is numerically literate enough to read these?
Quite likely, a large proportion of Twitter users are “numerate” at a high level, and presumably the Twitter population’s average numeracy level exceeds that of the general population. It will remain the case that graphs such as this do not convey much useful information to some people however:
(this is from Twitter Analytics, showing number of impressions per day)
I suspect that numeracy, or the ability to comfortably work with numbers and related subjects, such as graphs, is something that people are mostly unaware of. In other words, people who are very numerate, such as accountants and engineers, are probably not aware of the struggles that people who are not very numerate (likely many artists) would have. On the converse, people who are not very numerate do not have any idea of how useful numbers can be for understanding things like: change, proportion, relative risk.
Canada's average numeracy info is here (my first hyperlink, hope it works).
I further suspect that covid has caused many people to improve their numeracy, in an effort to understand the situation surrounding them.
